Created entirely from shaped and coiled strips of paper, this quilling artwork depicts the blood-brain barrier, the protective border formed by blood vessels in the brain. During disease, that protection can weaken, allowing inflammatory immune cells, represented here by a T cell crossing the vessel wall, to enter the brain and contribute to inflammation. My postdoctoral research investigates how this barrier becomes disrupted in conditions such as COVID/Long COVID and vascular dementia, and how we might restore its protective function.
